The main town in Western Cambodia is Battambang, a refreshing break from the touristy town of Siem Reap. Apart from colonial charm, Battambang and around have more on offer and you can easily spend a few days here.
One of the highlights is the boat trip to Siem Reap. Take this from Battambang, not the other way around as the boat then struggles to get upstream.
